Trainer Dorene Hofberg has been in the fitness industry for 30 years, so her daughter, Brooke Friedman-Meltzer, grew up with fitness on the brain. After years of talking about going into business together, the mother-daughter team opened Cutting Edge Fitness (21184 Saint Andrews Blvd., 561/368-6588) in fall 2008.
“We are not only mother and daughter, we’re best friends,” says Friedman-Meltzer. “We always said we wanted to make a difference and help people.”
After attending workshops and doing research around the country, the duo decided to create a class-centric fitness studio without membership fees. They found a spot in Boca Raton, gutted it and created three studios for Pilates, Spinning and cardio/functional training. Then, Friedman-Meltzer, an interior designer, gave the space an industrial-modern makeover. In addition to accents like steel-bead curtains and exposed ductwork, the studio features details meant to enliven the exercise experience, such as disco balls and a large video projection screen (in the Spinning room).
“Your body doesn’t get bored,” says Friedman-Meltzer.
Her mother chimes in: “And your mind doesn’t get bored.”
Friedman-Meltzer and Hofberg encourage customers to alternate among disciplines—a practice they call “fusion”—to get a comprehensive workout, and small class sizes offer the attention of personal training without the cost.
“Boutique is back,” says Friedman-Meltzer. “People get intimidated when they go into a big gym. We want to create a feeling of warmth and personalization.”
